MP HYGIENE

An alternative solution for treating process water

Having already installed softeners for treating utility water at MP Hygiène’s Annonay (Ardèche) site, which manufactures wiping paper, soaps and solutions for hand hygiene, BWT has deployed its innovative BWT ECO-MX technology for the on-site generation of fresh disinfectant solution by salt electrolysis.

Used to treat process water in a closed circuit, the resulting disinfectant solution has advantageously replaced the historical chemical treatments based on ammonium bromide and bleach, for the 30,000 tonnes of paper produced each year at the Ardèche site.

The issues

Water, at the heart of the paper manufacturing process

MP Hygiène, whose paper-making expertise dates back to 1865, is the leading manufacturer of pure wadding wiping paper with the Origine France Garantie® label and non-woven wiping paper, soaps and solutions for hand hygiene. In total, more than 28,000 tonnes of paper are produced annually in Annonay.

With a proactive CSR policy in place for many years, reducing the environmental impact and consumption of chemicals in its processes remains a major challenge for MP Hygiène. In 2018, the company decided to change the biocide treatment of its process water, which is carried out at a rate of 4 to 5 shocks per day, to a closed circuit. The aim is to reduce costs and dependence on the ammonium bromide and bleach-based treatment historically used

The solution

The effectiveness of a fresh, on-demand biocide solution

In addition to the softeners already on site for treating utility water, BWT offered MP Hygiène the BWT ECO-MX, its onsite, on-demand generator of fresh disinfectant solution using salt electrolysis. This solution, which is not classified as hazardous to health or the environment, not only met the company's biocidal treatment needs, but also its desire to limit its environmental impact by reducing its consumption of chemicals.

The impact is limited in several ways: the disinfectant solution produced by BWT ECO-MX is manufactured on site and on demand, and does not lose any of its quality or active ingredients through prolonged storage. From an environmental point of view, the elimination of chemical biocides is also accompanied by a reduction in the volumes delivered: for an equivalent result, the volumes of salt (delivered in big bags) are three times less than the delivery (and return) of chemical IBCs.

Finally, the absence of chemical product handling and the automation of shock treatments considerably reduce the risks to employees. What's more, the support provided by BWT France's teams limits the number of interventions by MP Hygiène staff on the installations

CAP 26 press conference

Eco-innovation for tomorrow's industry! In February 2023, with its CAP 26 strategy, BWT France unveiled its ambitions for its Industry division and launched its Green Chemistry operation, the aim of which is to accelerate the ecological transition of manufacturers. To reinforce this approach, which has been anticipated for several years, BWT France presented three biodegradable water treatment solutions that are new in the sector.
