Water for injection

WFI

Complies with the most stringent regulations

WFI is used for extremely sensitive applications: solution or dilution of substances and preparations for parenteral administration, bulk for the manufacture of parenteral or ophthalmic products, shaping or final rinsing of containers such as primary packaging.

Used in large quantities, it is produced on site by membrane filtration (ultrafiltration, etc.) or distillation. Wherever it is used, its quality is subject to strict controls at the heart of the process, and must comply precisely with the specifications and requirements of the various pharmacopoeias.

Cold or thermal, controlled production

By distillation or membrane technology, the production of WFI is dedicated to impeccable quality (absence of contaminants or suspended particles, etc.). Distillation remains the method of choice for many operators, and is essential for producing pure steam.

Membrane technologies, on the other hand, enable cold WFI to be produced, with a membrane barrier for maximum safety. These technologies also consume less energy, offering manufacturers savings and greater profitability.

At BWT we support you

Cold or distilled WFI

For impeccable quality, the tailor-made solution depends on a number of parameters - qualification of quantities and temperatures of use, on-site situation and utility costs.

BWT will work with you to define the best options for your site. Whatever the process chosen, we design, manufacture and install safe systems with a tailored service throughout the lifecycle.

BLOG - The European Pharmacopoeia opens up to membrane technologies

Since 1 April 2017, the European Pharmacopoeia has authorised the use of membrane technology to produce water for injection (WFI). This alternative to distillation is based on a cold treatment process that offers the same guarantees in terms of microbiological safety...

BLOG - Continuous monitoring of microbial water quality used for pharmaceutical purposes

Water used in pharmaceutics must be regularly tested for microbial load. Pharmacopoeias recognise the limitations of conventional control methods and recommend the use of other procedures to determine microbial quality. Cutting-edge technologies such as flow cytometry...
