Rockwool

Purifying catchment water to manufacture and cool

An ICPE specialising in the manufacture of stone wool insulation products and systems, Rockwool is deeply committed to preserving natural resources, in particular by optimising its industrial processes.

BWT has been working with Rockwool since the late 1990s

in treating the catchment water used both as a raw material in the manufacture of rockwool and in the cooling circuits, made up of 16 towers. Thanks to BWT's innovative solutions, Rockwool benefits from safer, more efficient and more environmentally-friendly installations.

The issues

Chemical-free treatment of catchment water

Rockwool, a material that combines moisture resistance, thermal performance and excellent building ventilation, is manufactured by melting, pulverising, cooling and shaping rock. Water plays an important role in this manufacturing process, both for the resin and for the cooling circuit.

As the water used by Rockwool as a raw material comes from a dam, the company called on BWT to implement the solutions required for its treatment. The aim was to obtain the optimum water quality required for the manufacturing process, while reducing the level of chemicals used on site.

The solution

A complete water treatment system

Following the installation of a sand filtration plant and softeners for the catchment water in 1996, BWT and Rockwool have continued their partnership to continuously improve the water treatment system.

BWT now treats 16 cooling towers on the Rockwool site. Several ECO-MX units have been deployed for chemical-free water detoxification and disinfection, as well as three osmosis units.

Results

resultats

Fewer chemicals

Thanks to the installation of 7 ECO-MX units, a BWT innovation, to replace biocides previously used

resultats

Risk management

Thanks to the preventive treatment of the 16 water heaters, no corrosion, scaling or legionella has been detected

resultats

Responsiveness and autonomy

Thanks to a BWT technician present on site and training of Rockwool personnel to monitor the installations
