Process and utility water

PURITY

Preserving quality, performance and the environment

Water is at the heart of the manufacturing process in the electronics sector, which requires water free of the slightest impurity to maintain the purity of its components.

The electronics industry must therefore maintain ultrapure process water, hence the need for demanding treatments. At the same time, the sector's commitment to the environment calls for innovative, environmentally-friendly solutions to meet all its priorities.

Reconciling performance and sustainable business

The electronics industry is working hard to reduce its environmental impact, and water, a fragile and increasingly scarce resource, is one of its main concerns. Action on a number of fronts reconciles these issues with those of water treatment performance: treating process water to remove the most harmful particles and agents, in order to limit the impact of discharges, and long-term maintenance of equipment and systems with utility and process water whose quality guarantees their performance.

Cleaning up the water

Generally pre-treated by reverse osmosis or electrodeionization, the water used in electronics industry processes contains metals of various kinds and agents that are potentially harmful to the environment. At the end of the process, this water has to be treated in WWTPs, in particular using metal insolubilizers, in order to separate the sludge containing complexed heavy metals in the treated water from the final effluent.

Once treated, this water can be re-injected into the process or utilities, or simply discharged without risk, depending on the use and the sites concerned.

Limiting the use of chemicals

Processes in the electronics industry require water that is pure in both mineral and bacteriological terms. Physical treatments such as reverse osmosis or electrodeionization are therefore particularly suitable for top-up water (municipal water, borehole water or industrial water).

As for the treatment of utility water, which traditionally consumes chemicals, it is possible to limit the use of these by choosing a salt electrolysis system, capable of producing a fresh disinfectant chlorine solution in situ, on demand. This type of solution provides the electronics sector with a healthy and ecological response to its environmental challenges.

Preserving equipment

As in all sectors of activity, utility water, which the electronics industry uses in closed circuits or cooling towers, must be treated in such a way as to limit the impact on installations. Treated in this way, utility water protects installations from scaling or corrosion, and prevents the development of biofilm on equipment and in pipes. Protected in this way against clogging, the equipment retains optimum performance and benefits from reduced maintenance costs, without over-consuming water and energy.
